Definition of omega-3

Omega-3s are a group of essential fatty acids, this means that man has to resort to food supplies of this nutrient because it can not synthesize itself.
They are found in many foods and as supplements. Recent studies of fatty acids would be beneficial for a wide variety of diseases.

Chemical definition of omega-3 (complex part for specialist)

The molecules are omega-3 long chain hydrogénocarbonée with several double bonds (also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids: which means that the channel is not fully saturated with hydrogen atom H).
The concept of omega-3 is a generic term that includes various fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) with 20 C and 5 double bonds, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with 22 C and 6 double bonds and acid docosapentaénoique (DPA) with 22 C and 5 double bonds.
As can be seen on 3 of the term omega-3 means the strict sense, 3 unsaturated, fatty acids or some part of this family have more than 3 links (5 ,…), it is therefore rather a group of fatty acids in the broad sense.
