These tests would detect and treat high cholesterol at an early stage, preventing hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), a major cause of heart disease.</p>
<p>These new guidelines represent a major change from current rules, established in 1992, and which are those that follows and supports the American Academy of Pediatrics: which are that cholesterol tests are performed only in children with a family history of cholesterol high and heart disease in obese or suffering from diabetes and hypertension. But these rules are not always infallible. In a study conducted in West Virginia in the United States, which examined more than 20,000 students in fifth grade. Many of these children with high cholesterol were not detected by current testing system.</p>
<p>It is for this reason that the review panel recommends all children to begin to reduce risk factors for heart disease early.</p>
