The Procedure of Gum Surgery
Your dentist or periodontal surgeon will describe the procedure and the method or technique he or she recommends to do it (with a scalpel, laser or radiosurgery). The procedure is performed in the dental office under local anesthesia.
* If the gum is too low you have to remove/cut the excess tissue.
* If the gum has receded and is worn, must be removed tissue near the root of the teeth and graft in the necessary areas.
Depending on the amount of tissue removed or grafted and the depth of the cuts, the gum will heal completely within a few days in the most simple or a couple of weeks in the most extensive. In any case, try to rest as much as possible the day of surgery and avoid strenuous physical activity until you recover. The doctor will tell you a special type of rinse for several days to prevent infection and help healing.
* Your dentist or oral surgeon will instruct you to not take aspirin for pain relief to prevent bleeding of the gums. In its place will tell you to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil).
* The diet should be soft the first few days after surgery to make you hurt less gum (examples include: mashed potatoes, yogurt, ice cream and fresh cheese or cottage cheese).
* Avoid foods with seeds, spicy and firm texture until the gums have completely healed.
* Follow your dentist’s instructions for brushing and rinsing the mouth.
* Call immediately if you bleed or if it swells too much gum.
